The Waller High School Fine Arts Department consists of a diverse group of teachers that focus on educating students in the areas of visual and performing arts.  Texas students who learn the disciplines of art, dance, music, and theatre, as they are defined by the Fine Arts TEKS have the potential to improve their quality of life as well as their performance in other academic areas.  Our Fine Arts Department is lead by Lea Kohn.  Ms. Kohn has been an art teacher at Waller High School for 17 years, and the Fine Arts Department Chair for 12 years.  Fine Arts Department members are Kayla Standford (art), Abigail Arellano (art), Krista Miller-Lutz (dance), Grant McWilliams, Richard Hanf, JD Neal, and Caleb Brown (band), Richard Owens (choir), Andy Hart (theatre) and Carrie Wood (theatre).

Waller High School’s Visual Arts program is guided by Lea Kohn, Kayla Standford, and Abigail Arellano.  Students in the Visual Arts program receive a variety of hands-on art experiences. These experiences consist of, but are not limited to, drawing (using a variety of dry media), painting (utilizing watercolor, tempera, acrylic, and oil paint), functional and non-functional ceramics, and photography.  Art students also compete in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Competition and the annual Waller High School Art Exhibition. 

Waller High School’s dance program is growing each year.  In dance, the student learns different types of technique, such as ballet, tap, jazz, and contemporary.  The students also learn dances from different cultures and time periods.  Each dance class performs two times a year outside of school.  The Waller Wranglerettes are the reigning Grand Champions of the Showtime International Magnolia West Contest.  In Wranglerettes, the students learn responsibility, teamwork, dedication, compassion, and friendship.  They learn how to work hard and make all the hard work pay off.  Life long friendships are formed through this organization.  The Wranglerettes also learn dance skills and currently have two former members dancing on the University of Houston Cougar Doll Dance Team and one former member dancing on the Prairie View Panther Dolls Dance team. 

The Waller High School Band, led by Grant McWilliams, is a competitive 5A program.  Its 140+ members participate in Marching Band, Concert Ensembles, Indoor Color Guard, Indoor Percussion, Jazz Ensemble, and a host of other musical activities.  The Waller High School "Bulldog" Band is a consistent recipient of the UIL Sweepstakes Award, has been the UIL Area E 5A Marching Champion, and has advanced to the UIL State Marching Contest three times.

The Waller High School Choirs, is under the Direction of Richard Owens.

The Waller High School Box of Stars Theatre is an award-winning theatre program that produces 5 to 6 theatrical events throughout the school year, including musicals, the UIL One Act Play and original student works.  This group offers a variety of theatre courses that provide our students with a hands-on experience in both acting and all aspects of technical theatre.  The Box of Stars Theatre is led by directors Carrie Wood and Andy Hart who bring to the table years of both professional and educational theatre experience.  The Box of Stars Theatre is a warm family environment where students can explore their talents and express their creativity.

Speech and Debate students is led by Andy Hart. This team competes in several tournaments throughout the school year, that leads to our District UIL Meet in March. For Speech, Prose and Poetry students create a woven program featuring poetry-books of poetry, transcripts of poetry from videos, or song lyrics, OR prose-including movies, plays, TV shows, books, etc. The Prose and Poetry Team has a rich history including 2 appearances at State by alumni Ashley Kitchens (Prose State Finalist in 2004), and Kennedi Hendrix (Poetry State Finalist in 2016). In 2017, the Speech team made Waller History by having the ENTIRE team place at our UIL District Meet. 

For Debate, the students become well-versed in current events and be able to articulate how those events affect the entire world. There is a debate class taught by Mr. Andy Hart. This understanding of politics, foreign affairs, and global conflicts produces well-rounded and informed students and often spurs an interest in politics.  Due to the fact that students must be able to argue both sides of an issue, they become better able to analyze issues. These skills are essential both in competition and in their own lives to become more able to see other perspectives. Debate is an activity that allows students to enhance their multi-tasking, research, and critical thinking skills.  There are unique experiences gained in debate that allows students to develop confidence and public speaking skills that will help them for the rest of their lives.  The research that students do in debate can be as challenging and in-depth as the research for a master's thesis.
