WHS Culinary to Showcase at National Event

WHS Culinary TeamWaller High School’s (WHS) Culinary program is proving itself as a team to be recognized in the culinary world. On Dec. 5, WHS Culinary placed in the top four at the Taste of ProStart Houston securing a spot in the  Taste of the Championship event. To win a spot on the national stage, the team had to compete against other Houston area schools. Culinary team members are Myka Arney, Justin Mace, Giana Serrano, James Vernon, and Kamira Winfrey, under the direction of Chef Tyler Osburn (TKO).

“This is an amazing opportunity for our culinary program to be showcased,” Chef TKO said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I am beyond proud, and get goosebumps every time I talk about it.”

For the Taste of ProStart Houston, WHS Culinary presented an amuse-bouche aptly named The G.O.A.T. An amuse-bouche is a dish meant to tease the palate of what is to come during a multi-course meal. The dish was a goat cheese panna cotta served with a balsamic fig compote, garnished with a roasted serrano. Attendees voted on their favorite dish to choose the top four teams. One attendee described the WHS dish as refined. While only five students were allowed to participate in the competition, this dish was the work of the culinary practicum class.

“It is difficult to understand the hard work and dedication these students exhibit on a daily basis if you are not there to witness it,” Chef TKO said. “It is an honor to see they are on the right path and have been recognized for their talents. This is a very proud moment for them, our program, school, and community.”

The Taste of Champions will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7 at Minute Maid Park before the 2024 College Football Playoff Championship. It is estimated over 100,000 visitors will be in attendance. WHS Culinary will be showcased alongside local top-rated, well-known, award-winning chefs and restaurants.
