5th Grade

  • Welcome to 5th grade at JES!

    ELAR

Fifth-grade ELAR is composed of activities that promote the growth and success of life long readers and writers! Reader's and Writer's Workshop is where the magic happens.  In reading, our students are becoming enthusiastic readers who read self-selected texts for pleasure, as well as for academic purposes.  In writing, our teaching is explicit and systematic.  Our kids are writing the kinds of text that they see in the world - nonfiction news stories, persuasive letters, stories, reviews, poems and much more.  We are learning and growing by leaps and bounds in reading and writing at JES!!

    Math

Math is all around us! In my 5th grade class, I focus on showing the importance of math in everyday life. I am extremely passionate about math, and try to instill that passion in my students. My students are expected to:

    • multiply three digits by two-digit numbers
    • divide with and without remainders
    • compare fractions
    • add and subtract fractions
    • find area and perimeter
    • find the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms
    • read, write, compare, and round numbers
    • make and use charts, tables, and graphs

All 5th-grade math students are expected to pass the state test in order to move on to middle school!

    Science

Science is fun and exciting!  Students LOVE science! Students are instructed in four areas of Science: Nature of Science, Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science.

In the Nature of Science, students are taught about lab safety, how to properly use lab tools and the Scientific Method.

In Earth Science, students learn the many different systems we have including the sun, earth, and the moon. They learn about constructive and destructive forces, the effects of weathering and erosion, and renewable and non-renewable resources.

In Life Science, students learn how adaptations help animals survive in their habitat, the role each organism plays in the ecosystem, and the differences between learned behaviors and inherited traits.

In Physical Science, students learn about physical properties. Students also learn about electricity, reflection, refraction, magnetism, mixtures, solutions, and forms of energy.

It is our goal that through hands-on learning, all of our students will understand science and the world around them.
