5th Grade

  • We are truly a "POWERHOUSE!" Our goal in fifth grade is to ensure the academic and social transition into a junior high setting.

The 5th grade teachers have behavior expectations for their students, and they are as follows:

    Behavior Expectations:

    •     Students will be respectful of others.
    •     Students will be prepared for class.
    •     Students will listen when an adult is speaking.
    •     Students will follow directions.

    5th Science Expectations
Fifth grade students continue to know how a system is a collection of processes that interact. They identify and describe examples of daily, weekly, lunar, and seasonal cycles including life cycles of plants and animals. They identify the significance of water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles. They continue to study the physical properties of matter, the conduction and insulation of heat, electricity, and the production of sound. They observe and measure constant properties of everyday substances such as boiling points and melting points. They differentiate among forms of light, heat, electrical, and solar energy. They study reflection and refraction of light. They continue to learn about adaptation and the unique niche of some organism in an ecosystem. They identify traits that are inherited in plants and animals. Students now interpret how landforms are result of a combination of constructive and destructive forces. Past and present events that affect the future help students understand the formation of Earth's renewable, nonrenewable, and inexhaustible resources. Gravity, gravitational forces in the solar system, and the physical characteristics of the Earth, are also identified and compared.

    Turlington Science Extravaganza
In Fifth grade, students will participate in the
    "Turlington Science Extravaganza"
by presenting a Science project that encompasses Fifth grade expectations.

    Math Expectations
Math is all around us! And that is the goal of my classroom, that all kids realize the importance of math in their everyday life! Students develop their math skills through hands-on learning, guided instruction, and self discovery!
The student should be able to:

    •  Multiply three-digit by two-digit numbers
    •  Divide with and without a remainder Add, subtract and compare fractions
    •  Calculate the area of a square and rectangle
    •  Multiply and divide with decimals (money)
    •  Apply basic geometry, algebra and measurement
    •  Read, write, compare and round numbers
    •  Make and use charts, tables, and graphs

    Language Arts Expectations
Writing is essential as well as a fundamental skill utilized across curriculums. Students strengthen and master these skills that will be carried with them as they progress through life. Interactive lessons are executed in the classroom to ensure that the student will be included in an education they will never FORGET!

After the completion of 5th grade, the student should be able to:
